One of the major departments at the College of Dentistry is the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Diagnostic Sciences, which comprises fundamental specializations in dentistry with regard to awareness and treatment.
The department also contributes to overseeing the research of internship students, carries out scientific research in a variety of specialized subjects through its members, and plays a significant administrative role in the institution.
The department consists of two main divisions: the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Division, and the Diagnostic Sciences Division.
The Division of Diagnostic Sciences includes four specializations: oral medicine, oral pathology, oral biology and dental tissues, and oral and maxillofacial radiology. In the field of oral biology and dental tissues, normal oral and dental tissues are studied both macroscopically and microscopically to better understand their properties and how those traits may affect therapeutic and clinical decisions.
The student studies the concept of disease, its causes and pathogenesis, its symptoms, signs, and consequences in the second year of general pathology before moving on to the special application of that in the courses of oral pathology 1 and oral pathology 2, where he studies the most well-known diseases that The teeth and the mucous membrane of the mouth and jaws affect the salivary glands, where these courses aid him in studying the diseases from the microscopic histological point of view. The courses in oral diagnosis, oral medicine 1, and oral medicine 2, which are offered in the second, third, and fourth years, respectively, aid in the development of the student's clinical knowledge and diagnostic skills, while the courses in maxillofacial radiology, offered in the second and third years, aid in the development of the student's radiological knowledge and skills. In order to create a full mind—the diagnostic mind—on which the optimum course of therapy for the patient is based, these courses are integrated.
The Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Division offers students a wide range of knowledge on the principles of surgery and its tools, as well as diseases in terms of diagnosis and treatment, such as the extraction of normal and impacted teeth or surgeries on tumors, cysts, and salivary glands, as well as suturing and methods. These courses run from the second year to the fifth year. also teach how to do pulmonary resuscitation, use an ambulance, etc.
